Non-monetary awards can work as well as monetary rewards provided they are part of a well-designed program that rewards employees for the desired behavior or performance. Better still if these rewards can be accumulated over a period of time and redeemed for something of value to the employee, which need not be cash or merchandize; could be a training program, coffee with the CEO or simply a day off! No need for huge budgets to implement and run a program like this!! It just requires some innovative and frugal approaches to create programs that have the desired impact on employee motivation without burning a hole in the organization’s pockets.
